Helios Infrasight Earns Transport Canada Advanced RPAS Certification

A New Step Forward for Helios Infrasight

Helios Infrasight has recently earned its Transport Canada Advanced RPAS Pilot Certificate.

For us, this is more than another qualification. It represents an important step in building a professional inspection company that clients can trust with work around renewable energy facilities, electrical infrastructure and active industrial sites.

Drone technology continues to improve quickly, but the aircraft itself is only one part of a successful inspection. Safe and effective operations also depend on pilot competence, regulatory knowledge, site preparation, risk assessment and disciplined decision-making in the field.

The Advanced RPAS certification strengthens our ability to bring all of those elements together.

What Advanced RPAS Certification Means

Transport Canada’s advanced pilot certification is intended for more complex RPAS operations than those covered by basic certification.

Advanced operations may involve more demanding airspace, locations, site conditions and operational requirements. However, holding the certificate does not mean that every operation is automatically permitted.

Each mission must still be assessed individually. Depending on the location and scope, an operation may require:

  • Airspace review and authorization
  • An aircraft suitable for the intended operation
  • Site-specific risk assessment
  • Coordination with the client and facility personnel
  • Emergency and contingency planning
  • Appropriate separation from people, structures and hazards
  • Compliance with local procedures and applicable regulations

The certificate confirms that the pilot has completed the required knowledge examination and flight review. It also demonstrates an understanding of aviation rules, weather, navigation, aircraft systems, human factors and safe operating procedures.

Why This Matters for Infrastructure Inspections

Industrial and infrastructure inspections often take place in environments that require more planning than a routine recreational flight.

A wind farm, substation, transmission corridor or industrial facility may include:

  • Energized electrical equipment
  • Tall structures and restricted access areas
  • Moving equipment and active operations
  • Nearby roads, workers or contractors
  • Controlled or complex airspace
  • Rapidly changing weather
  • Electromagnetic and communication considerations
  • Site-specific safety requirements
  • These conditions require more than simply knowing how to control the aircraft.

The pilot must understand how the inspection objective, aircraft, airspace, environmental conditions and site hazards interact. The mission must then be planned so the required data can be collected without creating unnecessary exposure or disrupting normal site activities.

Advanced certification supports that professional approach.

Better Planning Produces Better Inspection Data

A well-planned mission is not only safer. It also produces better inspection results.

Before a flight, the pilot must understand:

  • Energized electrical equipment
  • Tall structures and restricted access areas
  • Moving equipment and active operations
  • Nearby roads, workers or contractors
  • Controlled or complex airspace
  • Rapidly changing weather
  • Electromagnetic and communication considerations
  • Site-specific safety requirements

For example, inspecting a wind turbine blade requires a different flight profile than examining a substation component or documenting a transmission structure.

The pilot must consider lighting, background, wind, aircraft position and camera orientation. For thermal inspections, additional factors such as solar loading, distance, viewing angle and equipment operating condition may also affect the usefulness of the data.

Professional flight planning connects the inspection objective with the way the aircraft is operated.

Building Capability Responsibly

At Helios Infrasight, we believe qualifications should support real operational discipline.

Our approach includes:

  • Energized electrical equipment
  • Tall structures and restricted access areas
  • Moving equipment and active operations
  • Nearby roads, workers or contractors
  • Controlled or complex airspace
  • Rapidly changing weather
  • Electromagnetic and communication considerations
  • Site-specific safety requirements

We do not treat certification as a substitute for preparation. Instead, we use it as a foundation for safer and more consistent operations.

What This Means for Our Clients

For our clients, Advanced RPAS certification provides additional confidence that drone inspections are being planned and conducted by personnel who understand both aviation responsibilities and industrial operating environments.

It supports our ability to deliver:

  • Energized electrical equipment
  • Tall structures and restricted access areas
  • Moving equipment and active operations
  • Nearby roads, workers or contractors
  • Controlled or complex airspace
  • Rapidly changing weather
  • Electromagnetic and communication considerations
  • Site-specific safety requirements

It also helps Helios Infrasight continue expanding its inspection capabilities across renewable energy, substations, transmission and distribution systems, and industrial infrastructure.

Continuing to Invest in Expertise

The Advanced RPAS Pilot Certificate is one part of a broader commitment to technical development.
We continue to strengthen our capabilities in visual inspection, infrared thermography, industrial safety, reporting and asset-condition assessment.

Our objective is straightforward: combine qualified personnel, appropriate technology and practical field experience to provide clients with inspection information they can use.

The aircraft may collect the images, but professional planning, technical understanding and responsible decision-making are what turn those images into a reliable inspection service.
